PADI Enriched Air Diver Course
The PADI Enriched Air Diver Course (also known as the Nitrox course) is a popular scuba diving certification that teaches divers how to safely use air with a higher percentage of oxygen than normal air, allowing divers to extend their bottom time.
Description
PADI Enriched Air Nitrox is a popular scuba diving specialty course offered by PADI. It teaches divers how to use enriched air, also known as nitrox, which is air that has a higher percentage of oxygen (typically 32% or 36%) than regular air (which has about 21% oxygen).
Why Dive with Nitrox?
- Extended bottom times:Â Because there’s less nitrogen in the mix, your body absorbs less nitrogen during the dive, which reduces the risk of decompression sickness and allows for longer no-decompression limits (NDLs), especially for repetitive dives.
- Shorter surface intervals:Â You may need less time between dives.
- Less fatigue:Â Some divers report feeling less tired after diving with nitrox.
What You Learn in the Course:
- How to analyze a nitrox tank.
- How to set your dive computer for the correct oxygen percentage.
- Understanding oxygen exposure limits (oxygen toxicity).
- How to plan dives within the limits of enriched air.
Prerequisites:
- PADI Open Water Diver (or equivalent from another agency).
- Minimum age: 12
How the Course Works:
- It’s a non-diving specialty—you don’t have to get in the water to get certified, though some choose to do practice dives with nitrox.
